About This Site

I'm Mark Kolich, and this is my personal weblog.  I usually write about my technical interests, which mostly relate to client and server-side web technologies on various platforms and in numerous programming languages.  I enjoy solving tough technical problems, the right way.  Most of my blog posts are solutions to many of these difficult problems.  I love building great software, and writing elegant, readable, and maintainable code.

Colophon

This site is powered by Movable Type written in Perl.  It is hosted using mod_perl and MySQL with Apache on a CentOS Linux guest within VMware Server.  The host box is a 32-bit HP Workstation xw8000 powered by dual Intel Xeon's running at 3.06GHz with about 3.5 GB of RAM.  Data storage on the xw8000 is courtesy of a RAID-1 (mirror) software RAID volume on top of dual 146 GB 15k RPM Ultra320 SCSI disks.  For security, I use iptables to control remote access to my network.

Supporting code, including my Twitter widget is written in PHP using TwitterCacher.  Dynamic HTML is generated using Gagawa PHP, and jQuery is heavily used on the front-end.  My Translate and Share With widgets were also written for jQuery.

My tiny URL alias service at kolich.cc is implemented using Perl and Apache's mod_rewrite module.
